The
Counseling Program Who is the elementary school counselor? School
counselors work closely with students, teachers, school administrators,
parents, and other professionals to provide students with the best
resources and services. Counselors
provide guidance so that students develop academically, personally, and
socially. They help students
do better in school, build positive self-images, enjoy good relationships
with others, and develop good feelings about work, family, and society.
The goals of the counselor include but are not limited to: helping
children understand themselves and others, preventing problems from
developing, identifying children with special needs, providing crisis
intervention, providing career and character education activities, and
coordinating efforts with school psychologists, social workers, parents,
teachers, and administrators. Counseling is included in students’ curricula at the elementary level. Counselors work with students on an individual and small group basis. Students are referred to the counselor by teachers, administrators, parents, or self-referred. Counselors also meet with parents regarding parenting skills, improving family relationships, obtaining information about outside agencies, etc… Home |
