Counselor's Corner

The Counseling Program

Who is the elementary school counselor?

School counselors work closely with students, teachers, school administrators, parents, and other professionals to provide students with the best resources and services.  Counselors provide guidance so that students develop academically, personally, and socially.  They help students do better in school, build positive self-images, enjoy good relationships with others, and develop good feelings about work, family, and society.  The goals of the counselor include but are not limited to: helping children understand themselves and others, preventing problems from developing, identifying children with special needs, providing crisis intervention, providing career and character education activities, and coordinating efforts with school psychologists, social workers, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Counseling is included in students’ curricula at the elementary level.  Counselors work with students on an individual and small group basis.  Students are referred to the counselor by teachers, administrators, parents, or self-referred.  Counselors also meet with parents regarding parenting skills, improving family relationships, obtaining information about outside agencies, etc…
